Drummer, Dreamer, Damn-Good-Man : A Mini - Interview w/ Rob Hooper

Have you met Hoops? Below is our exclusive* interview with the man behind the kit, Rob Hooper.

So, why the Drums? Why not something else?

Drums were fated since the beginning.. I had a huge drum-shaped toybox as a kid that I used to beat the tar out of (and tupperware/coffee containers as well), and I would stare directly into our huge 70's stereo speakers whenever any heavily-rhythmic music was played (which was constantly in our house). Percussion is such a lifelong field of study that I can never tire of or lose my fascination with.

What’s one of your funniest memories from a gig?

Playing onstage in Austin on my birthday, while musician friends were side-stage alternately mooning me, blowing copious pot smoke directly at me, throwing paper projectiles at me, and finally hitting me with TWO whipped cream pies, causing my feet to slip all over my pedals for the entire last song. You can always count on your friends, especially your super-mature musician friends.

Do you write tunes?

I do write music, though my attempts by myself always pale next to what happens when I get to collaborate with one or two or several other people. I love the arranging part of the equation, so much less solitary and more fun.

What's a TOTAL PRO tip for making it through a big gig in one piece?

Hydrate like the wind. And concentrate, without overthinking. And it's supposed to be fun, dammit!
